*WARNING - this blog post may contain content some people find icky !*
I'll put my hands up....I am not the most eco friendly person in the entire world, in fact when it comes to greenhouse gases and the ozone layer etc, the only way I actively do my bit is by turning the lights off when I leave a room and by being vegetarian. However, when it comes to waste, I hate it, the thought of oceans and landfills full of waste, it disgusts me ! So I have decided to do a blog showing a few ways in which I do by bit to reduce my waste !
The Obvious One
Recycling ! I have two bins, one for recycling and one for waste, I recycle what I can, and do my bit. I should however do more as at the moment I don't have a compost bin (not sure anyone in my uni area does but we do at home) and also, although I don't use many things which come in glass bottles or jars but when I do, I never recycle the glass and I know that is bad, so that will change big time....just need to figure out where the nearest bottle bin is.
Another way I try to avoid waste is to prepare food in and use lunch boxes to take it with me rather than waste money and plastic by buying food out. Which in turn links me to the paragraph below !
Bottle It Up
This is one of my all time favorite products, or was until my boyfriend tried putting orange squash in it, now I need a new one....or few. The water bobble ! This thing is friggin amazing !!!! Just google it ! Not only does it cut down waste by stopping you from buying drinks in plastic bottles when you're out and about, but also it filters the water as you drink....I love it ! It's extremely useful in hard water areas as I hate the metallic taste you get from tap water. Bobbles start from £10 for a 500ml bottle but you can also get 1l bottles and I think 300ml bottles aswell and now there is also a fridge jug !
I also love the fact that you can change the colour of the filter and there are so many available ! They are also BPA free which is great if you are into that kinda thing !
One For The Girls
Ok, I know this is kind of disgusting for some people to talk about but I love this product ! Menstrual cups, a lot of people are very misinformed about this product, as I have learnt from the slur written on the stickers on many toilet doors. Before I get to the whole eco-friendly thing, let me explain the other benefits. For starters, the price, they are around £12 and you can use them for up to 10 years, that works out at 10p per month, can anyone honestly tell me they spend less that 10p a month on tampons or sanitary towels ?
Another benefit is that there is no risk of TSS. TSS is caused by a build-up of bacteria on the tampon, however menstrual cups are not porous and therefore the bacteria can't grow on it. Cups can be left in for upto 12 hours without causing any problems ! Also, unlike tampons, they don't sock up your natural moisture which leads to healthier 'feminine area'.
So finally onto the waste thing. Most tampons and sanitary towels and their packaging are not biodegradable ! Because I am too lazy to do any maths, I have found a brilliant blog (Becca's SexBlog) which has done it all for me, it works out that you will leave being 43 cubic foot of non-biodegradable waste in your lifetime from sanitary products alone. Now consider how many women there are in the world that use these items.......that's a lot of waste. So I urge every woman out there to try a menstrual cup ! FemmeCup is one of the many companies which make these cups.
I hope you found this blog post interesting, if not I will be back to doing beauty blogs again soon, I promise this is a one off ! Comments much appreciated !
Thanks !
